From Blythburgh to Bungay: Black Dog Runners Follow the Trail of the Black Schuck

On 1 August 2026, Black Dog runners laced up their shoes and followed in the pawprints of local legend, running from Blythburgh to Bungay along the route said to have been taken by the infamous Black Shuck in 1577.

The Black Shuck Festival is an annual celebration of Suffolk folklore, held in Bungay during the first weekend of August. The festival commemorates the tale of the mysterious black dog that reportedly appeared between Blythburgh and Bungay on 4 August 1577, becoming one of East Anglia’s most enduring legends.

With a choice of distances and paces to suit everyone, from a social 3-mile run to the full 15-mile route, runners came together to enjoy the challenge, the company, and the unique connection to local history.

Arriving in Bungay, the group joined the festival procession alongside fellow revellers. Bathed in sunshine and welcomed by thousands of spectators lining the streets, runners were greeted by a fantastic community atmosphere that perfectly captured the spirit of both the festival and the club.
